Initially, the plan was to see a performance by a gospel group holding a concert at the beach. Not really my thing, but I am doing what I can to keep an open mind and lately I find myself trying to reach out a bit. Besides, I will use just about any excuse to be near the ocean. Consequently, no doubt due to a lifetime of forged Heathenry, I wasn't able to last so it wasn't long before I got bored and split in search of greener pastures. That's when I came across Supergirl Jam.
What was once the basketball court had been temporarily transformed into a skate park to host a female boarding competition. Normally, I wouldn't go out of my way to seek out something like this but let's just say that for me the gospel event was not a tough act to follow. I guess that doesn't say much for my character when I'd rather watch a bunch of kids do tricks on skateboards than receive my dose of the holy ghost but 'tis the life of a sinner. Anyway, these girls were were fearless. It takes a lot of guts to attempt what they were doing, especially when half the time they were smacking into the pavement while trying to do them. It never fazed them, though. They would just jump right back up, brush their jerseys off, and them hop right back on their boards to do another stunt.. no helmet or anything. At one point I saw two skaters collide and it was pretty hard. She was down for a bit, clearly a little shaken from the impact, but it did not stop her from nailing a very impressive maneuver on the very next try. The event was entertaining enough for me to stick around to the end (that's saying a lot with my attention span). I even witnessed the award ceremony when they brought out the 3-level stand, announced the winner, and then cut her one of those giant-sized checks for big $$$. I think it was somewhere around five grand. A nice little payday for someone who can't even buy her own beer.
